Canon EOS R vs Nikon Z7 Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Comparison

In December 2017, I purchased a Canon EOS M6 Mirrorless Camera as a birthday gift for myself.

I've always wanted to learn more about photography all while trying to create more videos for my Youtube channel -- and I thought that the model I chose was totally ideal for me. The lightweight build the EOS M6 as well as its fast Dual Pixel AutoFocus system truly make this new tech journey and personal passion more fun and enjoyable.

Since getting my EOS M6, I've been reading a lot of articles and watching many videos on cameras and imaging. So far, I am very impressed with the new Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras that are in the news and I hope to play with them soon. I know that it might take a while for me to upgrade my gear since my snapper is still fairly new -- but hey, there's nothing wrong in starting to look at potential options in the future, right?

Canon EOS R vs Nikon Z7

With practically no competition, Sony has been dominating the Full Frame Mirrorless Camera category for several years now with the Sony A9, A7, and A7R lines. These systems became popular among professional photographers and even video creators because of their powerful sensor, 4K video recording capability, and fairly light build.

Well, just a few days ago, legendary erstwhile rivals Canon and Nikon finally unveiled their own versions of a Full Frame Mirrorless Camera - which they've worked on for many years - and these models definitely captured my fancy.

The Nikon Z7 was announced alongside its less expensive twin, the Nikon Z6, on Thursday - August 23, 2018. On the other hand, the Canon EOS R, was formally introduced on Wednesday - September 5, 2018.

Here's a side-by-side technical specifications table featuring the two mirrorless cameras, which I made for myself just in case I eventually have to choose between these two models as an upgrade. I'd like to share it with you guys, my fellow budding photography and videography enthusiasts.

So which 2018 Full Frame mirrorless camera is better? The Canon EOS R or the Nikon Z7?

Well, looking at the table above, I'd say that one is not entirely better than the other. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

I like that Nikon Z7 takes higher resolution images, shoots 4K videos at 1X crop factor, records Full HD clips at a higher 120 frames per second, and has a stellar 5-axis image stabilization system.

The main downside for this model, however, is that it costs a whopping $1,100 USD more for just the body.

Nikon Z7

On the other hand, I like Canon EOS R's fully articulated screen which is great for vlogging, lighter build, higher focus point count, lower price tag, and its Dual Pixel AutoFocus that I'm sure will make this camera a joy to use when recording videos.

I'd say that the key downside for this model, though, is that its 4K video recorder has a 1.74X crop factor, which means that you'll need a wide angle lens or converter if you want to be completely in the frame when hand-holding the device while vlogging. Oh, and apart from that, this mirrorless camera also lacks in-body image stabilization, which makes me scratch my head.

Canon EOS R

The common weaknesses of Canon EOS R and Nikon Z7 are their small batteries as well as their singular slot for the memory card.

To wrap up (for now), I'd say that while these two Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras are far from perfect, I still appreciate them for being tangible products of Canon and Nikon's efforts to give Sony a big run for the money in this camera category, which is quite simply the future of imaging.
