There are many Filipinos who currently own an aging entry-level Android smartphone or a downright old feature-phone who continue to feel hesitant to upgrade to a new device as they'd rather spend the money on their loved ones' needs or to save for rainy days.
Being a TondoBoy and coming from meager background, I totally understand where they are coming from. I also put the needs of my family above anything else -- even my love for gadgets.
However, as a tech blogger, I want to share that there are now smartphone companies that specialize in crafting devices that deliver big value all while having a very accessible price tag. Even if you're a bit tight on budget, these brands definitely have a handset that's right for you.
The freshly announced Realme C2, for example, dons a price tag starting at only PHP 5,490 and yet it already has an attractive design, a large screen, a decent of cameras, a large battery, and fairly capable internal hardware.
If I piqued your interest, join me in this quick unboxing and overview of this 2019 entry-level Android smartphone.
As you can see, the handset comes in this plain box with yellow outer case and gray internal container. Yellow is the brand color of Realme as it represents the vibrant character of the company's target market: The Youth.
What I have here is the 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM version of the Realme C2, which is priced at PHP 6,490 or a thousand pesos more expensive than the 2GB ROM + 16GB ROM variant. If you ask me, I think it's still a very good price for a device of this caliber. Later, I'll give a run down of its key features and main selling points.
When you lift the cover, you will be greeted by a message printed on the yellow paper sleeve containing documentation.
It says, "Hey, welcome to realme Family."
Inviting, right?
When you open the case, you will see another note right above the metal pin for ejecting the SIM card tray.
"Let's embrace a new journey"
I think it's a fitting message for those who will be upgrading from a laggy old device or a basic call-and-text phone to this more than capable smartphone that truly opens doors to new opportunities.
The complete package includes the Realme C2 unit itself, a small pamphlet containing warranty and security information, microUSB 2.0 to USB connector cable, the SIM Card Tray ejector pin, and the travel charger.
My review unit didn't come with a pair of earphones. I'm not sure if the official retain package will include one -- and I'm not holding my breath for it.
Anyway, the travel charger supports 2A output, which should charge the phone fast enough.
Now, let's take a closer look at the actual Realme C2 unit.
This model sports a large 6.1-inch HD+ IPS display with rounded corners and a Dewdrop Notch housing its 5 MegaPixel f/2.0 selfie snapper. The screen is protected by scratch resistant Gorilla Glass 3, which means that it's crafted to take the subtle knocks and bumps of daily use. But for those who want to be extra sure that the display will be safe, Realme had generously pre-installed a screen protector on the device. Sweet!
This large, clear, and bright panel makes viewing videos and vlogs on Youtube, reading websites and blogs, browsing social media apps, looking at photos, and playing 3D games more fun and enjoyable anywhere you are.
Flipping the device over, you will see its rather attractive back panel with an interesting design pattern. It has diamond cuts and thin lines neatly pressed on the pearl-finished shell. Personally, I prefer this one over a mirror-look as it attracts less fingerprint grime.
If you ask me, with this exterior, Realme C2 is an entry-level smartphone that you won't be shy to put on a table even during a round-table meeting at the office.
Despite having a sizable 4,000 mAh Li-Po battery pack that ensures more than a whole day of uptime with regular use, Realme C2 is also suprisingly thin and light!
This smartphone measures just 8.5 millimeters at its thickest point and weighs only 166 grams, which makes it a joy to hold and keep in the pocket.
Realme C2 also sports decent cameras, which is great for budding mobile photographers or those who just love sharing photos on social media.
At the back, the device features a Dual Camera Module made up of a 13 MegaPixel f/2.2 primary shooter plus a 2 MegaPixel f/2.4 Depth Sensor. Together, these two enable Portrait Mode that lets you add a beautiful blurred background effect to your photos of people, food, or any item that you want to highlight in the image.
Though it struggles a bit at night or in low light settings, the main shooter is reliable in well-lit conditions - even indoors. One thing I like about it is that it focuses on the subject really fast with just a touch. Also, it is powered by Realme's own AI software which automatically optimizes colors, highlights, and shadows depending on what you're shooting.
As for the 5MP Selfie camera in front, well, it's not the best I've seen from Realme as it offers limited dynamic range or color replication. But when you use it with AI Beauty turned on in well-lit settings - like outdoors with lots of natural light - it can give you nice selfies that are instantly ready for sharing on Facebook or Instagram.
If you love listening to music during breaks at school or at work, you will be glad to know that this model has both a 3.5mm audio jack plus a speaker that gets fairly loud -- perfect for when you want to share your fave tracks with your friends.
Unlike a feature phone that only plays your downloaded MP3 files, Realme C2 lets you play music on Youtube and Spotify, broadening your musical landscape.
Are you curious about Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, the game that your schoolmates or officemates always play on their smartphone at lunchtime? Well, you can finally get in the action and play with them using the Realme C2!
Although we can't call this model a gaming beast, its 12nm Octa Core Mediatek MT6762 Helio P22 CPU with PowerVR GE8320 GPU allows it to run most of the games that you can download from the Google Play Store, including Mobile Legends, which happens to be a partner of Realme!
Sure, you might have to lower the frame rate in the settings - especially if you get the 2GB RAM version - but the game will definitely run on this model. Now, in case you need more space for your other games and large files, you can always add a microSD card via the dedicated slot.
With the affordable Realme C2, you won't be left behind when it comes to playing the hottest mobile titles. No need to break the bank to be part of the smartphone gaming trend.
Running Android 9.0 Pie skinned by Color OS 6 user interface, Dual SIM Dual Standby Realme C2 will hit store shelves across the country starting on June 8, 2019. This model will be out in two classy colors, namely, Diamond Blue and Diamond Black.
You've been attending to the needs of your loved ones diligently. Perhaps, it's time to give yourself a treat by leveling up your mobile experience with a new Android smartphone.
